Using Picture Windows to Enhance the Look of Your Home

A picture window, sometimes called a casement window, is a large window with only one pane of glass, generally found only in large bathrooms or living rooms though also found in kitchens. They normally re open in the center, so they do not open all the way, and tend to have no mullion, unless they are toward the edges of the room. The term pictorial has been used to refer to these windows since the middle ages.

These large windows can contain several panes of glass if they are designed well, with the corners of each pane sliding into the next. The most common configuration of a picture window consists of two panes of glass separated by a small frame and filled with glass that slides horizontally on a track. There is often a knob on the inside of the frame that controls the opening and closing of the glass panes. The picture windows can be framed or unstained glass, although the most appealing ones are unglazed. Some have Roman etchings or colored glass in them.
